The Takeaway (national morning news show) interviews Orlando Modeno, a man who lived through the experience of disruption when he was a child. Hear the interview here>>
If there is a silver lining in Artyom’s disruption tragedy, it is that people in the adoption community, and society at large are now talking seriously about, often ignored, adoption issues – the realities of older adoption, disruption, and adoption reform. Some critical points and interesting discussions are taking place on John Raible’s blog.

The adoption world was shocked and horrified when news of Torry-Ann Hanson’s adoption disruption broke earlier this month. Along with her mother, Nancy Hanson, Torry placed 7 year old Russian adoptee, Artyom Savelyev, on a plane to Russia, accompanied by nothing but a note.
I’m hesitant to draw firm conclusions about this situation until more information surfaces. However, for those of you who are following this case, or have just heard about it here. Following are several links with more information.

A friend of mine sent me this article published in the online magazine The Root. It is definitely worth the short time it takes to read the entire article. There’s much that I agree with, and some that I don’t, but I think all of it is valuable. The author Angie Chuang writes: “Bring up race and adoption, and watch people squirm.” Are we still squirming when it comes to these conversations? Or have we advanced to a place where we are now much more comfortable talking about race and adoption? Do any of the things the author writes about surprise you? What do you think?

I published a post last night that was still in draft form (hit “publish” rather than “save”). -Yes, this is what happens at 12 am when you have been sleep deprived all week. I took it down, and will re-post it when it’s finished. In the mean time… how about another musical interlude?
This is a collaboration between Zara H. Phillips and muscian and frequent activist DMC (yes, from the very awesome band Run-DMC)

Adoption Mosaic’s winter 2009/10 newsletter The Constellation has just been published. In this issue we included a review of the childrens’ book Motherbridge of Love (previously a poem entitled Legacy of an Adopted Child). To read the review see page 4 of our winter newsletter.
As editor of The Constellation, I felt some hesitation about including this book in the newsletter. Although it’s never been clarified, I felt that by publishing a review of a book or movie on either the website, or the newsletter, we are giving it Adoption Mosaic’s unspoken “seal of approval.” The vast majority of the books (and movies) we review are books that we, the many people who make up the whole of Adoption Mosaic, generally feel good about. However, several of us, (myself included) clearly don’t feel good about the message this particular book sends. Wanting to know more about how others felt about it, I asked some members of Adoption Mosaic’s staff and board their opinions of the book. This is the feedback I received:

My all time favorite adoption themed movie for the holidays is Elf. Will Ferrel is truly hilarious as Buddy, the human adopted by elves. We are showing it at our upcoming Community Movie Night on December 8th. Come laugh with us, and then join the discussion that follows the movie.

Over 125 adoptees, adoptive parents, birthparents, adoption professionals, adoptive family members, and community members came together on Thursday to watch Adoption Mosaic’s screening of the film Adopted.
It was an incredible evening and clearly the discussion after the film could have lasted much longer than what we had time for. This multi-faceted film brings up so many important issues surrounding adoption. If you watched this movie with us at this event, at Adoption Mosaic’s Movie Night, or if you’ve seen it on your own, how has Adopted impacted you?
Also, be sure to check out our interview with co-producer Nancy Kim Parsons to get a deeper understanding of the people and processes behind the documentary.
After months (and months) of resisting the inevitable, this week I finally broke down and created a Facebook account. Adoption Mosaic is in the process of creating our own Facebook page. I figured, if AM has one, gesh, so should I. But honestly, curiosity just got the better of me. Read the rest of this entry »
I was in a gathering of adoption constellation members the other night and at one point the conversation turned to media. One person asked “Is it just me, or is there a huge amount of adoption related attention in the media lately?” Everyone in the room agreed that lately there’s seems to be an onslaught of adoption related movies, stories, television shows etc.
Some feel that, although imperfect, all the media attention is ultimately a good thing since it draws attention to the world of adoption and brings adoption into the mainstream. Alternately, many others feel wary when such a complex topic as adoption is relegated to sound bytes and media sensationalism.
What do you think?
